Hello, I’m Jeremy! Vancouver is where I’ve lived most my life. Went to UBC Sauder Business School and graduated in 2023 specializing in Accounting. Planning in near-future to enrol in CPA Accounting Program, which is structured part-time studies while working full-time. So I’ll still be around and you can find me at CRC!
What does a typical day look like in your role?
Usually I find myself circling between emails, spreadsheets, and online admin systems. As finance coordinator, I help PIs manage and apply their research funding towards the costs of daily functions of the lab. I am usually involved in coordinating internal cost chargebacks, reconciling lab credit cards, processing travel expense claims, and entering invoices for payment.
What kind of impact do you hope to make in your current role?
Support important cancer research. Hopefully by limiting the bureaucracy that makes it to the investigators and their labs. I’ve come to learn there’s a lot of paperwork behind the scenes in the research process. In my opinion, if I’m able to reduce that paperwork in any way for the end-users, it would be a job well done!
What’s one part of your work that people might be surprised by?
The admin staff only make up a small minority of the overall people in the building. At times it can feel isolating, especially with hybrid work options being more common and fewer staff working on-site everyday.
What advice would you give to someone interested in working in a role like yours?
Organization and detail-orientation are great technical qualities when working with numbers. More specifically to the work environment, I think being able to work independently and being self-driven are definitely important characteristics for this role. And finally having an interest in the research can help make the work all the more meaningful!
Are you more of a morning person or night owl?
Definitely a morning person. I find I’m much more productive and generally optimistic. Used to be a night owl as a student, but I think that was a result of avoiding assignments until the last-minute. A great advantage with working is everything (mostly) stops after stepping out the building!
